Department Profile
The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1993 with the introduction of B.Sc. Statistics Programme with Mathematics and Computer Science as complementary courses. In 2020, Kerala government sanctioned an aided programme M.Sc. Statistics with Data Science. The department has a well-equipped computer centre exclusively for the M.Sc. Statistics programme. M.Sc. Statistics Students are provided training in softwares like Python, R and SPSS. Our department offers programmes that combine the theory and practice of Statistics to prepare our students for successful careers in a wide range of industries.
Our faculty members are experts in diverse areas such as, Machine Learning, Data Visualization, Statistical Modelling, Data Mining, R Programming, Python and more. They are dedicated to providing high-quality instruction, mentorship, and research opportunities to our students.
For students interested in pursuing advanced study in statistics, our department offers a Master's program that provides a more in-depth exploration of statistical theory and methods. The courses of the M.Sc. Statistics programme include Measure and probability theory, Theory of probability distributions, Analytical methods for statistics, Sampling theory, Statistical computing using Python, Estimation theory, Stochastic processes, Multivariate distributions, Testing statistical hypotheses, Statistical computing using R, Design and analysis of experiments, Time series analysis, Multivariate analysis, Statistical techniques for data mining, Statistical modelling, Non-parametric statistics, Applied algorithms, analysis of multi-type data, Machine Learning, and Data Visualization and Analysis of categorical data. Every student M.Sc. Programme must undertake project work and internship in a reputed industry or research institute. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in industries such as data science, finance, and consulting, as well as for further graduate study.
