Department Profile

Established in 1954 under the affiliation of Kerala University, the Commerce Department of Sree Sankara College, Kalady, holds a prominent place in the history of Ernakulam District. Over its six-decade journey, this department has been a trailblazer in commerce education within the state. Notably, it was among the first colleges in Kerala to offer a B.Com Degree course with Cost Accounting as an elective. Subsequently, in the late 1960s, the Post Graduate Course within the commerce department commenced its operations, and by 1997, the research center of the department earned its recognition.

 

Distinguished personalities from the realms of Education, Commerce, Law, and Economics have actively contributed as resource persons to the department. Initially, the department provided B.Com Finance & Taxation and M.Com Finance courses with an annual intake of around 80 students, while the number of applications consistently surpassed 300. Responding to valuable feedback collected, the management and IQAC introduced a new course, B.Com Computer Application, which began in the academic year 2014.

 

Today, the department welcomes over 100 students annually and boasts a talented faculty and modern amenities to support their educational journey. Over the years, the Commerce department has published approximately 700 dissertations. Additionally, the department plays a pivotal role in fostering entrepreneurial skills in its students through the Entrepreneurship Development (ED) Club.
