Department Profile
Sree Sankara College was established with a vision to perpetuate the memory of the Great Acharya and Saint Sree Sankaracharya. Swami Agamananda founded this college in 1953. The institution was raised to the status of a first grade college in 1956. It is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and is included under section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC act, 1956. The patronage of the college became vested in His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sri Sankaracharya Swamigal of Sringeri, from 1960 onwards. Sri Sri Bharathitheertha Mahaswamigal of Sringeri Mutt steers the administration through a board of Directors.
The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 1995 and has been upgraded as a Research Centre in November 2009. This is the only college in Mahatma Gandhi University which offers M. Sc Microbiology course in the aided category and is the only Department in the State of Kerala to be upgraded as Research Centre in Microbiology. There are four faculty members in the department which is the sanctioned strength by the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Kerala. Three of the faculty members are approved research guides of the Mahatma Gandhi University.
The Department of Microbiology has been in the forefront of the academic activities of Sree Sankara College even since its inception in 1995. The Post Graduate programme, pattern, has been changed to the Credit semester scheme from 2012 batch onwards. Each semester covers four theory papers and one practical paper. At the end of the fourth semester, each student has to submit a dissertation of the research work carried out during the course of study. Internal evaluation carries 25% of the credits. Internal evaluation is a process of continuous assessment, which includes assignments, test papers, seminars etc. The University conducts external examination at the end of each semester. As a part of the academic activity Journal Seminars and discussions are conducted every Thursday. Extension activites like blood grouping camps are conducted during each academic year in the college campus, in association with the NSS unit of the college. A lecture series on Recent Trends in Biological Sciences was conducted. Eminent Scientists from various research institutes were invited.
The syllabus was revised and the new syllabus is being followed from 2019-2020 onwards.
Biospectrum 2023 was conducted recently.
